The wavy texture on the tank is because they applied this special putty (zimmerit) in order to keep magnetic limpet mines from sticking to the vehicle. Applying this coating and waiting for it to dry added days to the production time of the tank and continued despite the fact that none of the allies used this sort of mine. A very German feature of an iconic German tank.
