Forgive my lack of knowing but during this time period did they need to hold that pose for any length of time? Any good sources which could help me understand how cameras during this time worked?

It appears that, in the bottom right corner, someone walked into frame while the photo was being taken and realized, “oh I’m not supposed to be here right now,” and promptly left.
Or that’s just a ghost of the battlefield.

The fighting 69th. I believe they were predominantly Irish immigrants. There are a lot of Irish folk songs about them.
