The use of teargas was justified. In the days prior to this protest students were rioting, which lead to the national guard being called in. When the riots continued, national guard used tear gas to disperse them, to which some students threw back towards police, in addition to rocks and the like. Kent State had already informed students that the protest wasn’t happening due to how much trouble had already been caused on leading up to the 4th. Use of bullets is more unclear to justify or condemn, as most witnesses have completely different accounts. However what was clear is that students were following the Guard around Campus. These students weren’t 100% innocent.

I briefly worked with a doctor who was in the Kent State riots. He said it was terrifying and he would never forget it.

1970, bunch of boomers protest the government they send in the natguard to shoot them.
2020, the same boomers protest the government and they won’t even pull them over for a ticket or issue a citation.

Also the killings at Jackson State a week or so later – but no one wrote a song about that, or remembers it. Historically Black College (HBC) and Black victims.

No one was held responsible for those killings either.
