Patrice Lumumba, first democratically elected Prime Minister of the independet Republic of the Congo, short before his execution, after being captured by Colonel Joseph Mobutu’s rebel troops on his attempt to flee to his stronghold at Stanleyville. Leopoldville, Congo, December 6, 1960.[1559×1239]
Many streets in Russia are named after him, including one in my town.
He looks like he is disappointed in something…
His killing was sponsored by the CIA cause Amerika did not like the fact that Lumumba went to ask for help at the Soviets communists after Amerika denied his plee for help and development funds. They let him wait a whole day is a waiting room at the white house just to send him away with the excuse that the president is not in office, while he could hear the president speak in the other room and calling him “The Jungle President”
I thought he was less executed more murdered and that it was Belgians who did it. Dismembered and dissolved.
Maybe I’m confusing him with someone else.
“I am not a communist… they look upon me as a communist because I refused to be bribed by imperialists.”
Wow, the discussion about Lumumba is incredibly interesting and gave me, and I’m sure others, tremendous insight into Lumumba and the Congolese political environment at the time of this photo.
Joseph Mobuto AKA Mobuto Sese Seko AKA Dictator of the Democratic Republic of Congo (which he renamed to Zaire) from 1965 to 1997 AKA the guy who went to shopping trips to Paris on a fucking Concorde AKA the guy who fucked over the Democratic Republic of Congo with the help of the US, Belgium and China.
“Ahh fuck. I left the oven on, didn’t I?”
Dave Chapelles mother was one of Lumumba’s closest advisors.
Modern Africa would be so much different if this man had not been killed. Also, everyone should read *The Poisonwood Bible* by Barbara Kingsolver, it’s set in this era.
