Photograph shows a flag flown from an upper story window of the NAACP headquarters announcing that “a man was lynched yesterday.” New York City, United states. 1936. [1200×630]
The "A man was lynched yesterday" flag has been created by the NAACP after the lynching of Jesse Washington on 1916, when they raised $20,000 and used part of this money to make this flag, who was flown outside their headquarters the day after someone has been reported to have fallen victim of mob lynching.
The first time this was flown was on 1920 and they stopped this practice on 1938 after their landlords threatened to evict them over this. It notably flew 73 times in the period for lynchings in the state of Georgia alone.
