I thought this must have been taken early in the war as they still seem rather stunned and defiant. But this was very close to the end of the war. Curious.

I remember going to Dachau in the early 80s as part of my post graduation European vacation with friends. I also remember the pamphlet they handed out (in multiple languages) saying you shouldn’t blame the citizens of Dachau and neighbouring towns as they had no idea anything untoward was going on. Even after seeing this type of thing occur in the streets of their towns on many occasions. Pretty appalling.

We read about people all the time who risked everything to help. Many people did what they could to hide people. I did four years there with the Army. They knew, they all knew.
