It doesn’t look like this community was either born Jewish (a la Ethiopian Jews) or converted into it. Looks like it was just an independent group of people that decided to practice Judaism. The Rabbi claimed to be able to trace his ancestry back but that’s pretty doubtful. Anyway it was a short-lived synagogue that no longer exists.
