Rare photo of general and former U.S. president Ulysses S. Grant behind him is a posture brace to help prevent movement during a photo session, sudden movements would cause blurring due to long exposure time. early 1860’s. [640×929]
Imagine how awesome it must’ve been back in the 1800s to get your picture taken

Looks like 3 stars on the shoulder strap – that puts it between March 4, 1864 and July 25, 1866.
If it’s 4 stars, that puts it between 1866-1869. It doesn’t look like 4 stars to me, but the buttons on the uniform coat are in groups of 4, while other pictures of him at Lt. General (3-star) rank in this type of uniform show groups of 3 buttons on the coat, so it’s possible.

The scratches on the photo looked like a saxophone at first.
I’m like ‘Damn, that Grant was hipper than I thought.’

Brace also, reduces whiskey/cocaine/laudenum induced movement.

Ah, America’s 3rd greatest President (imo). 1st is Washington, 2nd is Abraham. The Scipio to Lee’s Hannibal! The great unifier!
