San Francisco lies in ruins on May 28, 1906, about six weeks after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The aerial photograph was taken from a camera suspended on a kite, perhaps 1,000 feet above the city. (by George R. Lawrence) [7000×2748]
I think the method of photography is far more stunning than the photo itself. This must’ve felt like a genius innovation, to be able to see an aerial photograph at the time. I wonder how they pulled the camera shutter from the kite?

Picture says it’s taken from an airship at 2000 ft up. Either way it’s a cool pic.

What a gorgeous photo. There is something already archaic about this and I love seeing the crannies of individual streets.
