Steam boilers and hull fragment of the USS Cairo, a Civil War ironclad sunk by a remote detonated mine in the Yazoo Pass on December 12, 1862. The Cairo was raised in 1964 and is now on display at the Vicksburg National Military Park. [ 1023 x 865 ]
I visited the park, it’s amazing what military men were expected to put up with back then. Imagine a 110 degree floating iron box firing loud smoky cannons with little to no ventilation.
