I recommended the graphic novel The Harlem Hellfighters written by Max Brooks (World War Z) about the men of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment—who were reorganized into the 369th Infantry Regiment upon reaching France.

Is given, or is giving?

Many of the officers apparently aren’t black.

I see a few soldiers who clearly are not black. Were there also other ethnicities incorporated in these regiments?

He said, "Will you defeat them
Your demons and all the non-believers?
The plans that they have made?
Because one day, I’ll leave you
A phantom to lead you in the summer
To join the black parade"

What a brilliant picture, and what awesome uniforms!

Did those massive collars have a protective purpose, or where they only part of the uniform to look badass?

I have to think the year is wrong in this picture, I’m not sure why there would have been a military parade during that year

They are marching past Vanderbilt’s "Marble Twins" mansion and the Plant mansion on E. 5th. The Vanderbilt building, or half of it that remains is now the Versace building. The Plant mansion is now the Cartier store. The Vanderbilt mansion is is flying the french flag in 1919 and from Google Street View, the Cartier building is now flying it.

I wonder why most of the men in the rows rearward don’t have belts/bandoliers.

Out of this whole picture the thing that stands out the most to me are the two distinguished gentleman in their suits and hats at the bottom right looking in the direction of the camera. They look like movie stars to me… I bet they were a fun bunch.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Wilson barred black soldiers from combat duty and those black soldiers ended up fighting under French commanders on loan to the French army. Serving in that capacity, they saw combat way before their white counterparts, but not 1916. In 16 Wilson was still pledging to keep us out of the war. That said the American Expeditionary Force didn’t engage in combat until May of 1918.

Parades for the shoulders going off to war was one reason the Spanish flue pandemic was so terrible. At Louis shut down their parades and as a result had far fewer cases and deaths.

There not even in line they should be One unit Martin together
