Amazing. Serious question: how did things like this just get lost to time and eventually buried under several feet of earth? Completely erased from memory until it’s discovered in an excavation? I mean I get that Roman Empire fell but there were still people around afterward right? It’s so fascinating.

Some interesting background on the person the statue is of, Antinous: He was a very close friend (and likely a lover) of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Such loved was he by Hadrian, that following Antinous’ mysterious death, Hadrian had him deified and founded a cult devoted to his worship. He even founded a city near the location of his death and called it Antinopolis and founded games in his commemoration! ([Source])
