Not just the UK’s biggest airship, it was the world’s biggest airship when built. Just like the next biggest airship – *Hindenburg* – *R 101* met a fiery end when it crashed in bad weather and burned in 1930, apparently due to cover/gasbags failure. It was a worse disaster than the *Hindenburg*, with 48 people killed and just six survivors. It ended the British airship program, but unlike the *Hindenburg* was not filmed live by journalists, so it received much less publicity.
