“The Golden Thirteen”, the thirteen African American enlisted men who became the first African American commissioned (12) and warrant (1) officers in the United States Navy. Recruit Training Center Great Lakes, March 17, 1944 [1391×1594]
I come from a WWII US Navy family, and I salute these gentlemen!

The very first building you get to at Navy boot camp, Recruit Training Command, is called The Golden Thirteen building. I think we only went there a handful of times, but it’s burned in my brain.

Guess these gentlemen had a hard time getting there and also being there. Hats off for their will to serve their country anyway.

Fantastic Book! One of the men was stationed with Bill Belichick’s father in Japan. He was the only white officer on base that would talk to him.
