The gravestone of John Barleycorn (the fictional embodiment of alcohol) in Meriden, Connecticut hours before Prohibition became law at midnight on January 16th, 1920 [1200×1608]
Tonight at midnight will be exactly 100 years since Prohibition began in the United States. "The noble experiment" went horribly awry, ending up as one of the most ill-advised and poorly enforced acts of legislation in the history of the United States. Thirsty citizens became criminals by merely buying a drink, organized crime expanded to unprecedented heights, and thousands fell ill or died drinking tainted illicit alcohol. Despite a mild decrease in alcohol consumption by citizens, it was all in all a complete failure.
