Amazingly, it wasn’t until the river burned again in 1969 that major national attention was drawn to the issue and cleanup efforts began.
Here’s an article written for the 50th anniversary of the cleanup project beginning. It includes some great photos so you can see the improvements.
The project was (and continues to be) a massive success. A person born at the right time who would have been covered in sludge if they went for a swim in the river as a child can now eat fish they catch out of the same river as an adult.
