Cool photo, I’ve seen a few different movies, where the last four letters were destroyed in some fashion during the film. The movie 1941 the letters get shut up by John Belushi’s character. And in the movie Rocketeer the bad guy steals the rocket pack and explodes the last four letters when he flies into them because it’s on fire. I can’t think of the other movies but I get a big kick out of how those last four letters always seem to be blowing up buy different movies to explain why it only says Hollywood now.

Peg Entwhistle, a minor actress, jumped off the sign and committed suicide. When I saw this post I looked it up to see if they knew which letter she jumped from, and it turned out to be the H, and then I noticed that the day she died was the day my mother was born, September 16, 1932. Now I’m freaked out.

Everytime I see it, it reminds me of the movie 1941 when the Japanese sailor cries in agony "Howwywooood!"

The sign was supposed to be a temporary promotional installation for a new housing development being built in the area. It’s been reinforced and replaced a few times because it wasn’t built to last longer than a few months.
