The last French duel: Members of Parliament René Ribière (Gaullist) and Gaston Defferre (Socialist) fought with a sword over an insult in Parliament from the latter to the former. The arbiter was Gaullist Member of Parliament Jean de Lipkowski. Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. April 21, 1967. [550×272]
Conclusion: Ribière was inexperienced and after the second cut (they agreed to fight to first blood but continued after the first cut) he gave up his sword.
Whenever dueling is mentioned, I think of Edward Abbey’s quote:
“We should restore the practice of dueling. It might improve manners around here”.

France… 1967?!? What’s going on?

There’s a little bit more about that duel : René Ribière was going to marry the very next day, and Defferre did know that information. If both hits he got on Ribière were on the forearm, he was actually aiming for the groin – specifically in order to ruin his wedding night.

Just think how civil folks would be if dueling made a comeback! It would make watching government so much more entertaining!?
There needs to be some mechanism for members of congress to hash their differences out like this today. Anything but poisoning the minds of the people with insults and misdirection and whataboutism over twitter and nightly news.
