First unlucky sod to throw his life away for the elites is… Drum roll. What the fuck. I wonder what most vets think now, with this Iran bullshit. Doubt the millennials will take kindly to being the next gen of cannon fodder.
The sole lottery you want your number to not get chosen.
This turns my stomach to knots just looking at it. I can’t imagine how it must have felt waiting to see if my number was up
I LMAO when this photo was first shown in the newspapers because I was serving the last month of my four year army commitment in 69. I knew the bastards couldn’t send me back to Vietnam.
More about the method
I never before considered how important it would be that nobody could influence the selection process. Looks like some process imperfections lead to some non-random outcomes, but this was fixed.
In this lottery the chances of being selected are the same as being hit by incoming artillery.
The lottery used by the Selective Service to determine which men would be drafted for Vietnam first. In each capsule is a day of the year, determining the order of men drafted by their birthday. Washington D.C. 1969
They made it into a public television event… seems so dystopian – movie like
My grandpa was 1 number away from being yeeted into Vietnam
If you were, say, a 20 year-old male, what were the odds of being drafted?
US should still have a draft, much less war in the world if it was so.
I got 346 and didn’t have to go. Tense times.
People are talking about the past and how terrifying it must have been to watch but, in the event of a new draft it would return to service for us to witness.
Taken from the wiki: In the present, not much has changed regarding how the draft would be conducted if it were required in the future. The Selective Service Committee, which presides over draft procedures, has stored the large tumbler that holds all the numbers and dates that would be drawn to select candidates, and the only obvious change between the method of the past and the present is that instead of using pieces of paper in blue capsules, the SSC now uses ping-pong balls with the dates and numbers on them.
My number was 002.
thank god im a zoomer
2 of the best things today. Birthday and winning the lottery. 1969: going to the jungle
This must be the origin of those dumb shirts “don’t fuck with me I was born in November” /s
I used to think the hunger games was unrealistic with the whole randomised selection. "Why would a society leaves such an important decision up to chance?"
What sickening sight.
I thought it had something to do with the last 2 digits of your SSN.
