The way this happened was amazing. An east German politician worded something wrongly that came across as basically “open the wall” when he meant something like easier access to documents for crossing IIRC. So people celebrated and went to the wall and the three guards at the checkpoint,having no idea what to do…just opened the gate. The whole crowd flooded in, and when that happened it happened at all the gates, then people started climbing over, and at that point it was too late to stop; Berlin was United.
