My dad grew up in Los Alamos during the 1950s, must have been a unique experience for sure! It’s still a very interesting and unique place, and beautiful as well despite the massive forest fires in 2000 and 2011. In this photo you can see the older switchback route that was abandoned in favor of the curving route to the right. This is still the main road into and out of Los Alamos, although another road that I’ve known as the truck route leads up to the back side of the city via the canyon to the left. If you look carefully mid-way up the plateau along the road you can see the guard tower, and the large clearing nearby is the airport while the labs and community is situated further back towards the mountains.
