The wreckage of the experimental Bell X-2 jet after a crash that killed pilot Milburn Apt, east of Edwards Air Force Base, California, September 27, 1956 [992×715]
Judging by the lack of marks around the debris, looks like he was in a flat spin, coming almost straight down.

Looks like it broke apart into 3 pieces before the impact.
Edit: Film from inside the cockpit shows a time lapse of the flight. Apt hits Mach 3 before "inertia coupling" causes a roll that turns into a flat spin. The front end of the plane was an escape pod that separated, but he couldn’t make it out before impact.

His last radio transmission was, “There she goes.” …… What a damn legend!
