The photograph shows Trafalgar Square looking east from the roof of Canada House. The square was transformed into a replica of a shell shattered French village for several weeks on October 1918, the purpose was to encourage the purchase of war bonds for the further prosecution of the war. The slogan on signs around the square and in newspapers was “Come to Trafalgar Square, Feed the guns with war bonds and help to end the war”. The start of the campaign was at Noon on Monday 7th October when all the anti-aircraft guns around London fired one round each, the first day saw the sale of two and a half million pounds of war bonds, many of which were stamped by a machine which had been placed in the breeches of three 9.2-inch howitzers on the square.
