Two knocked out tanks sit close to each other after a battle near the village of Ginsterhahn, German (March 13th, 1945). The tank on the left is a German Sd.Kfz. 173 ‘Jagdpanther’ while the one on the right is an American M36 tank destroyer. [1257 x 534]
If I recall correctly there’s a video on YouTube about this by a guy who does great ww2 and history videos. Posting this comment so I can come back in a bit with a link.

Obviously wouldn’t have made a difference here even if this wasn’t the case, but note the significant cracking around those two shell holes on the JP.

Wow I’ve never seen this one before, thanks for posting! I’ve been really interested in learning more about the M36, as it was probably the most capable and effective TD that the US has in service during the war, but actual documentation on them is pretty slim. I do know that one of them supposedly knocked out a Panther at over 2000 yards, which is a record for the Allies, but again the documentation is slim.

My grandfathers TD unit got M36s in early 1945. Upgraded from M10s. I love pictures like these.

A patient I had last year was in an M36 during the Bulge, killed two Tiger tanks. Can’t even imagine going tank v. tank back then.

IIRC there’s a picture of a Jagdpanther with a hole through the front, it was apparently knocked out by a M36. I wonder if this is the same tank or has any relation?

There’s a pretty ugly exit wound on the Jagdpanther, but what makes us think the M36 is “knocked out”? It looks pretty intact, with tracks still in place and no significant damage that I can make out.

M36 crew prop dead. Hatches not opened and hit to the right ammo rack .
