Until 1965, when the police was nationalised, all male Swedish police officers carried sabres, the female officers had rubber truncheons.
The sabres were apparently not very sharp; they rarely caused deep wounds, and most of the time the broadside was used in order to thwack people, rather than not slash. When the sabres were unsheathed and held at the ready, they naturally also had a rather intimidating effect.
The fact that sabres remained in use so recently seems like an anachronistic anomaly to me. Does anyone else know of a country were the police used sabres until the 60’s?
