Hoping they both survived that nightmare to have lives filled with happiness and loving families and friends.

My Dad was a 17 yr old sailor on a US Navy ship during Battle of Okinawa. He was a Machinist’s Mate repairing landing craft for the assault.
He went ashore while the Marines were still trying to convince the last Japanese soldiers to come out of their tunnels so they could be safely taken prisoner. The Marines pleaded with the holdouts. If they refused to surrender and wouldn’t stop shooting the Marines were forced to use flame-throwers.

Well if you gotta be there, be there with Thompson submachine gun and a BAR.

The war in the Pacific sucked so bad. Just read a story about Peleliu. Out of an overstrength company of 235 only 78 walked off the island. And, of course, the Japanese losses were insane.
