USA 3rd Infantry Division enjoy their Christmas dinner on the hood of a Jeep. Uncle Sam had great logistics and treated his soldiers well. Northern Italy December 1943. [Colourised 960×863]
During the war in the Pacific, the US Navy commissions ships containing massive concrete mixers for constructing fortifications as the Navy and Marine Corps took Japanese islands. It turned out they did not need as many as they built, so 3 of the ships were converted into ice cream ships, using those concrete mixers to make hundreds of gallons of ice cream at a time.
There was a Japanese general who learned about this, and knew the war was hopeless; while the Japanese could hardly manage to feed and supply their troops, the Americans were sending them ice cream!
Pretty cool post. The allies invented an entire academic discipline/branch of mathematics to deal with logistics during WW2, which eventually evolved into what is currently known as operations research.
