USS Saratoga (CV-3) sinking in Bikini Lagoon after she was fatally damaged by the Baker Day underwater atomic bomb test, 25 July 1946. Her hull number is visible at the front of her flight deck; air is escaping from her submerged hull; oil is streaming away to starboard.
Can anyone explain what actually kills the ship in this instance? Its not like the hull was penetrated by anything (?), is it just the pressure buckling the hull?
