Not just any mortar shell, but a 600mm mortar shell from the Karl-Gerat mortar!
I was going to comment there is no way that was a mortar. Then I read the comments below. TIL.

This shot tilted whole structure. After the war building was ‘nationalised’ by Polish communist government. For few years on the roof nested an eagle. Ruin was often depicted in anti-war posters. In years 1950-53 it was renovated in socialist realism style, and became a hotel. Hotel was closed in 2002, later sold to bulding/civil engeenering company, and later to private family. In years 2010-18 it was renovated, and socialist realism elements were removed. Later in 2018 it was reopen as 5 star hotel Warszawa.
