Photo found in my wifes grandfathers old WW2 photos. Handwritten Kurrentschrift German style of writing written on the back is translated as
2.8.16 (1916?) Killed spies, which where sentenced by the army court in Chelm and hanged on the 2.8.16(1916?). The russian student Jonko Steschofsky marked with an X was caught by myself on 19.7 whilst he was disguised as a civilian coachman and got convicted of being an Spy and was strangled with the other one on 2.8(1916?

After some research it appears that in 1916 the Austrians took over the town of Chelm. I’d love to get some more information on this.
Poland didn’t exist in 1916, as part of the 123 years in which Poland did not exist as an independent state. This would have been within the German Empire.
Looks like they mixed the ropes up, tall guy on left is touching the ground, short guy 3rd from left is 2 feet in the air. Rope may have stretched or something too.
