100 years ago, on this day in history (June 6th, 1918), while standing at the edge of an open field, about to charge the German positions, facing withering machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire, then-1st Sgt Daly is said to have turned to his company (73rd Machine Gun Company) of fellow United States Marines and yelled ***”Come on you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?”***
This is also the battle where we got the famous response to the French urging the Marines to turn back, “Retreat? Hell, we just got here!”
