The second wave of Allied troops jumping into the water with some of them immediately got cut down by hostile fire, Omaha beach, June 6, 1944. Photo by Robert Capa
When I look at these photos I wonder to myself which guy would I have been? The one shot as soon as the ramp dropped, one drowned due to my gear, or one in front leading them up the beach?
I am not afraid of much, but I can’t imagine myself being able to do much more than being sea sick, frozen in fear, and trying to find a place to hide.

I don’t necessarily go for the “greatest generation” vocabulary, but I doubt this generation would have the physical and moral courage it takes to get in that boat and then jump out a ways from shore and run for several hundred yards under fire.
