75 years ago today, a Frenchman took a picture of the Allied warships arriving to invade Southern France. Also known as “the lesser-known D-Day.” August 15, 1944 [1078×661]
I’ve often wondered what French civilians thought when seeing the Allied invasions on their doorstep. Did they dread the thought of the coming battle or were they elated that their country was about to be freed? I’m sure it depended upon how involved they were with the resistance or with the Vichy government but I can’t help but think that if I saw this coming I’d get that pit in my stomach forming even if I believed the invasion was righteous.
Edit: Originally said "villains" instead of civilians. Whoops, sorry French people.
