I understand why these guys would want to reunite as comrades, but this was at the zenith of the rise of Jim Crow after the release of the film "Birth of a Nation" the year before. President Wilson was making Jim Crow federal policy, and that’s when all those statues were going up all over the South. This depicts a part of that–the mythical "lost cause."
