I believe the year is wrong, and that “middle Don” refers to the Don river which played a major role in the Stalingrad fighting beginning in August of 42, and ending in February of 43 in a massive german defeat. In that epic battle I can image a single survivor out of a german division, which would have been approximately 16-20 thousand strong. This soldier (note his winter uniform) might have managed to escape and evade near the end of the fighting when the russians were surrounding and capturing whole Corps (multiple divisions) of the german army.
