Michael and Edmond Navratil, the only children to be saved from the Titanic without a parent and therefore orphaning them. Photograph taken in 1912. [693 x 485]
Actually, they “only” lost their father, like most of the children onboard *Titanic*; their mother was not aboard. Their story: their parents had divorced and their father, Michel Navratil, had “kidnapped” them (the mother had been given their custody) and boarded *Titanic*, heading for America. He boarded the ship under a false name, claiming to be a widover. During the sinking, he had the two boys loaded onto Collapsible D, the last lifeboat to leave the ship, while he himself elected to remain aboard (he had a revolver with him, but did not try to use it to get a place on a lifeboat) and died. They were reunited with their mother a month later. Michel Jr. was one of the last *Titanic* survivors to die, in 2001, aged 93.
