Anarchists marching the streets of Barcelona, celebrating the Social Revolution, implemented in 1936, after the failed Coup d’État led by the fascists. [960×612].
Fascinating bit of history for what was to be a very tough time for Spain afterwards.

And Spain didn’t become a constitutional republic until 1975.
If the 20th century made one thing clear, it’s that countries with battles between national socialists/fascists and socialists/communists always have horrible outcomes. These are two different authoritarian groups battling to steal resources from the private individuals who produced them. They are built on using force to take from others and therefore always cause conflict and misery as the victims fight back.
Countries with stronger classically liberal traditions, like the US and to a lesser extent the rest of the Anglosphere, have had far superior outcomes. Classical liberalism is kind of like pragmatic, moderate libertarianism btw – the word liberal changed in the US after FDR co-opted it.

Orwell wrote a very interesting book about his personal experiences in Spain during the civil war, including Barcelona during this time. It is called a Hommage to Catalonia. It is the predecessor to his famous book 1984, and definetely worth reading!
