I have visited many former ww1 battlefields, and few things in the world is more sobering that witnessing the scale of pointless suffering that war caused. At least in ww2 the sides where fighting for a cause.

As incredible the sacrifices made by these brave men were, I can’t help but feel a muddy miserable trench is an awful thing to die for.
Lest we forget.

I can’t help but think about how expendable people were back then. Just send in 100k people and let 50k of them perish and it’s fine. Even WWII and D-Day or how the Soviets just let millions of their soldiers succumb to the environment or enemy fire.
Maybe that’s why the West now places such a huge emphasis on individual life and is wont to avoid as many casualties as possible. Any loss of life in the western world with more than a few people is considered a huge tragedy.
