Looks like that is an entrance to an upstairs apartment (would be known as a flat in Durham) and the downstairs access was on the other side of the building . The number of chimneys also may indicate this. I.e 4 fire places per flat . This was common in Durham mining villages. My grandmother lives in a house which was originally a pair of miners flats.
