Jeez, what an utterly depressing picture. I come from a fairly depressing mining village, though the pit closed when I was a boy, but at least the miners had windows.
How come the bricks get progressively smaller towards the top?
Shift work. They likely needed to sleep during the day.
Do you know which village this was?
Looks like that is an entrance to an upstairs apartment (would be known as a flat in Durham) and the downstairs access was on the other side of the building . The number of chimneys also may indicate this. I.e 4 fire places per flat . This was common in Durham mining villages. My grandmother lives in a house which was originally a pair of miners flats.
