Was Henry Campbell black? Being that this was a public hanging in Georgia in the early 1900’s I am guessing that he was but it’s difficult to tell from the picture.

With the people in front of the camera staring right at it, it makes me feel they came to watch me be hanged. It makes this picture even more eerie

Almost the only person in the whole photo not wearing a hat.

Why is everybody holding the shoulder of the person in front of them?

In today’s world everyone would be taking selfies at this.

Even his soups could not save him from this fate

I’ll never get why anyone would like to see an execution. It must be traumatizing to say the least.

I grew up a out 20 minutes from there… never knew this happened.
ChasseGalery
There are some black dudes in the crowd. This was a real “come all” event for early 19th century Georgia.
Starsimy
Who is NOT wearing an hat here??
other64
Where is the gallows, or even the hanging tree?
Sean Bell
I am from Florida and Henry Campbell was my great grandfather. The story of his crime seems a little suspect. The friend, John Hudson (husband and father of the wife and child, killed) turned states witness on him but only got a prison sentence. He has several surviving grand children left.
