French war correspondent Jean Marin regarding the body of a small child murdered by German SS troops at the Legaye house. Stavelot massacre, Belgium, December 1944. [800 x 535]
1rst Lieutenant Franck Warnock from D company of the 117th regiment recalled the incident in his personal journal.
"About the butchery of the 23 civilians, I distinctly heard the screams, the sound of the shots and also the distinctive fire from a German machine-pistol. We called the weapon a burp gun because of its extreme rate of fire.. When we took that place from the Germans I can also say that a boy of about 8-10 years, wearing no hat, had been smashed in the head by a rifle butt. He lay in a heap with the imprint of the rifle butt clearly showing. Yes, I counted 23 dead in an area hardly more than 10 feet by 20 feet."
There is war, and there is evil. The veil is thin.

huh, turns out that guy ended up as the general director and later president of the AFP, one of the (edit) "big four" world press agencies with Reuters, UPI and Associated Press.
Edit: Oh shit, the big four provided 90% of foreign news printed in newspapers in 1981.

Regarding is a false cognate with the French word regarder. In English we used watch or looking at. In English regarding means concernant.

People tend to say that wars makes people evil.
There are many veterans of different wars that agreed about one key detail of the war: it’s not that war makes people evil, it’s more that during the war all the rules and laws we follow in a civil society just doesn’t work anymore.
For many veterans war unlocked the real nature of human beings: cruel, violent, prone to overwhelm the weaker.
And this nature is result of centuries were men had to kill to eat, kill to defend themselves and kill to get more power, when nobody knew the concept of diplomacy.
Kids were used to see violence, in cold-blood murders and that was the standard. So for centuries kids have grown getting the imprinting that violence is normal, the only way to deal with your life.
So I don’t get really surprised that soldiers still today as in the past are capable of the worst things. It’s in our nature be like that the moment we live without rules and our actions, even the worst ones, gets no consequences.
In a context were killing people is not considered a crime but you’re also trained and awarded for doing it, and the stronger wins, you know the bar is set so low that even the most innocent guy you know could turn into a sociopatic psycho.
Then once back at home, back to live in a civil society, most of the soldiers, even those who committed the most terrifying war crimes are able to live a normal life.

People commenting about nazis here would %99 become nazis if they were in the same place/time as them. You should stop treating nazis as an exceptional phenomenon and start to face it because its in you too.
