I’m pretty sure the photos of Japanese “samurai” from this time were all posed actors. Studio photography took off in Japan around this time and the real samurai were almost all gone. Source, relevant info at ~3:50Vox darkroom. Not that it’s any less cool, just maybe not what it appears to be!
