Nazi soldiers carrying coffin with remains of Napoleon II (Napoleon only legitimate son) to the dome of Les Invalides in Paris, December 1940 [2000 x 1333]
Napoleon II (known as Duke of Reichstadt on Vienna court) was only legitimate son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Austrian archduchess Marie Louise (daughter of Austrian/Habsburg emperor Franz II).
After fall of Napoleon he was brought to Vienna. He lived there practically in golden cage, while his grandfather emperor Franz was warm toward him he was under constant supervision by Metternich secret police. He died young in 1832.
He was buried in Imperial crypt in Vienna like all members of Habsburg dynasty. In 1940 Hitler decided to return his remains to Paris. He probably wanted to initiate pro-German feelings in France and he personally despised Habsburgs so it was his way to humiliate them.
While most of his remains were transferred to Paris, his heart and intestines remained in Vienna in the "Heart Crypt" (Herzgruft).
