   Why are they so "proofed" out around the waist? Did they have some way of hitching up their garments while doing chores?

   Edit: here’s a point of reference: traditional Dutch dresses come all the way down to the ground. In this photo I’m wondering if there was a method for holding up these dresses while out doing chores. It would keep the fabric clean and less likely to get snagged on objects.

    I visited Marken a few years ago and went to a traditional clog-making shop! It was so cool seeing how they were made. The area was beautiful as well!
