Hitler made many major military mistakes during the war and opening the second front in Russia was one of them. Even in 1943 he could have negotiated with Stalin and made a deal for Eastern Europe, but he insisted on total victory. He then sent troops from the Western front to the Eastern front and then had to send them back to France when he realized that there would be a massive invasion in France. And then he was faked out to believe the invasion would come at Calais and not Normandy. He was a terrible general.

I read somewhere that they wanted the war to end on German grounds so the people of Germany can see what war acutally is with their animals slaugthered and houses burnt. I don’t think anybody expected what Red Army would do to retaliate…

The Germans got absolutely destroyed in Russia. They should have immediately gotten rid of hitler and sued for peace from the French, English, and Americans. The country was fucked for 50 years because of that maniac hitler.

Makes you wonder what happened with all the Ukrainian Nazi collaborators, especially after the war with your hands bloody and nowhere to hide.

Oh I wouldn’t say liberated. More like, under new management.

It should be noted that the vast majority of the destruction in the Kyiv center was done in 1941 by the USSR itself, that planted numerous time bombs throughout the whole city center (especially Khreshchatyk, central city street) set to detonate some days after retreat. The resulting detonations created a ring of fire that destroyed most of the city center. Some detonations were done in Lavra as well, destroying 11th century Dormition cathedral over there (this Russians deny to this day). Most of city center was rebuilt in early 50s in a coherent Stalinist style. Big parts of Kyiv, such as PodilPodol, remained undamaged though, even through battles in 1943

Just an FYI, Ukraine highly prefers the Ukrainian spelling of Kyiv over the Russian spelling of Kiev

Read Babi Yar: A Document in the Form of a Novel by Anatoly Kuznetsov. An incredible account of the German occupation of Kiev. Absolutely chilling.

After having a city obliterated I’m surprised how clean the streets are.
