Valparaiso police release video of customers pouncing on Aldi robbery suspect
Police said Hebron resident Thomas Powell, 36, entered the store at 2906 LaPorte Ave. shortly before 7:20 p.m. wearing a mask. He demanded money from the cashier and implied he had a weapon in his pocket, police said.
By the time officers arrived, five or six individuals were holding Powell on the floor, according to police. All money was recovered at the scene.
__________
coppish: “The hell if my milk price is going up”
L4NGOS: That customer is ice cold, he just steps to the side and tackles the robber. If I ever find myself in a situation like that I hope I act as determined as he did.
Hoax13: Couldn’t the have had a display of cans there where they ended up so the cans could fall and go all over the place?
everyothernametaken1: I love Aldi!

MissKillian: Fake, I’ve never seen two cashiers on duty at Aldi
ResidentSexOffender: Great tactic to force him into an area around loads of other people. Otherwise it may well have been a 1 on 1 that could go very bad.
donottrustahoemygod: Can someone who knows tell me what the cashier is doing once the customer grabs the other man? Looks like she’s on the floor?
burtreynolds89: I work at the Menards in the same shopping area as this happened. It was kind of odd to hear about. We are a pretty affluent area that is mostly white. There’s not a lot of crime. At our weekly meeting yesterday our General Manager says he plans on telling all employees that in a situation like this you let them take the money then try to get a plate or picture or something. Not worth it to start a confrontation.
Cow16ii: Wayyyy to many people in a place like that to rob it.
billharrell: That shit wouldn’t have happened at whole foods.
gentleman_caller: I live in “the Region”. We generally look out for one another. My car has ended up in ditches several times in winters past. Each time I was out within 15 minutes from a complete stranger who would be driving around just to help people out of ditches. People will come to your aid here, regardless of the situation, your color, age, etc.
I know it was probably smarter to just let the guy take the money, but our hero’s decision doesn’t surprise me at all.
Nurum: I feel like if you’re trying to rob an Aldi it might be time to rethink your life choices.
ToneBelone: I thought it was the old lady trying to steal a bunch of check out candy and blue shirt stopped her only to have a fight break out behind them over some canned sweet potatoes.
keenynman343: That customer has the biggest ball, he clearly cant tackle so he probably has never been in an altercation like that before. but god damn is that ever bravery and courage.
whoevencaresrly: Not sure if it was the smartest thing to do to try to tackle a potentially violent person towards a little girl
theironjeff: This is my city. Valpo represent!
mrsaucytrousers: The dude grabbed the robber and ran him straight into a child. While i’m sure he had good intentions, it’s best to just let the man take the money. He could have grabbed the child or stabbed any number of people. $100 isn’t worth risking lives.
whereyat: It’s interesting that the two guys that joined in to help did so at the exact same time. Wonder if at that point they both felt safe enough to help. OR maybe there was just an audio cry from help when the guy got punched.
croixian1: The word ‘brazen’ comes to mind.
bluntmanandrobin: hey this happened just a little bit from my house. nice.
WoGeddy: no mercy for thieves
BionicCatLady5K: That old lady at the end. ::hand to cheek:: “oh dear!” ??
GarnetsAndPearls: Robbery aside… Is it the camera that is making the aisles look wide?
Aldis in my town is awesome, but it feels like I’m shopping in a closet.
themiddlestHaHa: I love these exaggerated bear hugs. There have been several of them on this SR and they’re all fantastic.
sarcasmcannon: Serious question, if they killed him, would they be charged?
Hero17: This guy sucks at committing robbery.
timesuck6775: How many other people read this as Robbery foiled by customers Audi first? I was thinking the whole time where is the car??
UndercoverFBIAgent9: ITT: people who watch too many Steven Seagal movies.
yankerage: Having to buy a whole sack of onions is the real robbery at Aldis.
Tonydanzafan69: I love how those two guys do absolutely nothing then try to join in at the last minute. You missed your shot as being heroes retards. Be useful and call 911
