Read the story of the Leningrad premiere of his 7th symphony. It happened during the siege with starving musicians & they blasted it towards the German front. Epic & tragic.
If anyone wants to learn more about Dmitri Shostakovich and/or the Siege of Leningrad. I’d highly recommend Symphony for the City of the Dead by M. T. Anderson.
If I remember correctly, this photo was proven to be staged because no one would actually jeopardize Shostakovich. He was a volunteer but he was almost never asked to report.
What a guy! His Waltz No. 2 is one of my favorite classical pieces!
