The dead body of Benito Mussolini and mistress Claretta Petacci and those of other executed fascists, on display in Milan on 29 April 1945, in Piazzale Loreto, the same place that the fascists had displayed the bodies of fifteen Milanese civilians. Photo by Vincenzo Carrese. [800 x568]
I love Jim Carey’s punchline on the bad things fascism leads to: just ask these guys.

Which one of these is Mussolini?

Too bad Hitler and most of his cronies escaped a similar fate.

Did they pin up her skirt? If so that is quite classy for a brutal execution.

My great uncle served in WWII and was stationed in Italy. I remember him recalling people spitting on the bodies.

TIL I was idly wondering how Mussolini was killed and after some googling found out that, mostly in Italy, it’s the subject of a lot of conspiracy theories. Most people accept he was shot by communist Walter Audisio, but since the war all sorts of debates have arisen, such as the recovery of secret papers linking Mussolini to Winston Churchill.

May be of some interest. Graphic content.
Few months earlier, in that same square, 15 partisans were executed during a reprisal in August 1944 and their body left to rot under the summer sun for an entire day, under the armed surveillance of fascist militians, which kept desecrating the corpses.

Such "examples" were tragically common in the Repubblica Sociale Italiana during its short existance. Here are some other episodes.
