(Afaik) Since the Berlin Wall was built the Brandenburg Gate was a restricted area and looked like this. This pic is from the Eastern side and from ’85.
From the West it looked like this. (Last picture is from 1988)
Unless you were a member of the border police or a high ranking East German official it wouldn’t have been possible for you to walk through the gate. It was off-limits for normal East German citizens.
