Pretty sure this is viewed from the west side as you can see Tiergarten on either sides. Also, most of those cars are western cars, not eastern ones.

This is just cars by the Brandenburg gate, all other context of that caption is totally speculation.

This picture confuses me. It was clearly taken from the western side of the Brandenburg gate and there is about the same amount of cars heading east as there are cars heading west. As there are many western cars in the picture (not available to easterners) I also doubt that those cars heading east are east german citizens going back home from a first daytrip to the west during the first days after the opening of the wall.
All in all I fell this picture needs some explanation.
